Are you a cannabis fanatic? Do you feel it should be part of you? Learn the following tips for traveling with CBD oil. That could be you, but you are worried about getting into trouble with the law. Worry not since it’s possible to travel smoothly with your CBD oil when you abide by some regulations.

If you’re a CBD fan, you know that CBD extracted from industrial hemp has been legalized on the federal level after the 2018 Farm Bill. Companies can now legally grow, sell and transport CBD-rich hemp products across the United States, provided certain guidelines are met. While most CBD products are legal in most parts of the U.S., you might land into trouble when traveling. CBD is a secret weapon amongst many travelers. CBD oil is consumed to avoid flight anxiety or muscle aches. However, crossing borders with CBD can be complicated. This article discusses some tips for traveling with CBD and what CBD is.

What is CBD?

CBD oil or cannabidiol is a chemical compound or cannabinoid extracted from industrial hemp, as Corroon & Kight (2018) explained. Besides cannabidiol, it also contains tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as THC, in trace levels. According to Shannon & Opila-Lehman (2015, THC is associated with marijuana, and it’s the psychoactive compound responsible for making users feel high. However, the THC level in CBD isn’t enough to cause any high effects. The THC in CBD should be less than 0.3% at the federal level. It’s critical to keep some things in mind while traveling with CBD oil to avoid inconveniences such as landing into trouble with the law. These include;

Examine Your CBD Oil

You’re advised to examine your CBD oil before taking it anywhere. That’s because it must contain less than 0.3% THC levels. Lachenmeier & Sproll (2019) stated that if CBD contains more than the stated amount of THC, it’s considered illegal marijuana. Therefore, you must ensure that the oil contains less THC if you want to carry it around while traveling. It’s possible to distinguish by reading the product’s ingredient label and identifying its THC content. While CBD oil is legal at the federal level, keep in mind that laws across states regarding possession of CBD oil may differ.

Moreover, examine the Certificate of Analysis (CoA) to ensure your CBD products align with legal requirements. A CoA is a printout of the lab report of the product, and it’s important for cannabinoid content verification by any inquiring authority. Also, if you’re using CBD oil for medical reasons, you should always keep the prescription handy while traveling. Provided your products are clearly labeled, they should not cause a problem during the security check. Lastly, ensure that your CBD products are in their original packaging with the manufacturing labels intact to avoid any inconvenience.

Pack CBD Oil with Other Liquids

When traveling, the Transport Security Administration (TSA) allows you to take some quantity of liquids with you. The container’s size limit is 3.4 Oz and should be put in a clear quart-sized bag. If you decide to take your CBD product in your carry-on bag, pack it with any other liquids. Your CBD oil products are inspected and separated from your carry-on bag at the inspection point. The added benefit of this is that you’ll have your CBD oil product if you need it during your travels.

Travel with Your Prescription

Do you have a prescription to take a CBD product? Epidiolex is the only CBD drug approved by the FDA, and Sekar & Pack (2019) expounded on it. Instead of risking, carry your prescription with you. This doesn’t warrant that a TSA officer or agent will not question you, but it’ll surely work in your favor. Therefore, keep your prescription and any other relevant documentation in a safe place with your product’s CoA.

Proper Knowledge of the Laws Of Your Place Of Visit

CBD laws differ across states. Therefore, if you want to travel with CBD oil, you must research the laws of the place you’re visiting. For instance, you may find that CBD edibles are legally available for sale and purchase in your state. However, that doesn’t hold with other states. So to prevent complications, ensure you are conversant with the laws in the state you’re visiting. Furthermore, your state may be lenient on CBD laws, but another one could have strict laws and enforcement rules in place.

Don’t Contend

You might be tempted to get into an argument with a TSA or police officer when they question you about the legality of traveling with CBD. However, note that this may not help you, and it may only land you in trouble with the enforcement officers.

It’s better to listen to them and explain your side of the story. Always be the one on the low since talking too much might make you appear rude and result in more trouble.

Conclusion

If you’re traveling outside your state, ensure you thoroughly check the laws and policies of your destination to be on the safe side. Also, you can play it safe and have your CBD oil shipped ahead of time to your final destination. The tips above are for your benefit so that there’s no inconvenience when traveling. Take the amount allowed with proper prescription and documentation, and avoid getting into an argument with an enforcement officer.
